The lighting in this image gives the character a erie feeling to him.

The costume shows who the character is as a person and makes him look scary and mysterious.

The shot composition portrays the character as intriguing mysterious and exciting this helps engage the audience with the character.

Are all apart of Mise en scene, when Mise en scene is used it brings a scene to life and brings the characters to life, for example by seeing what the character is wearing we can assume what that character is like as a person if he or she is good person a bad person etc.

In this image from a scene in inception we can see Leonardo DiCaprio sitting at a table mid conversation, he is dressed in a suit and tie which either means he is proposing a business deal or just trying to make a good first impression but just by his clothes we can get a lot from this image and that's why Mise en scene is important in films to give characters a background and to go give the audience a better understanding of the scene. Another example of Mise en scene appearing in this scene is the walls in the background by looking at the walls we know that he is in a Japanese like room we know this because of the mural like prints on the wall.
